How accurate are national grid restoration times? ›

Work volume, the cause of the outage, and the extent of the damage can all affect our time estimates. Storms can cause widespread damage to our entire distribution system.

In most cases, water heaters require electricity to function. Without power, you might end up with a cold shower. If you're comfortable with cold water, this might not be an issue, but if not, it's best to wait until the power is restored.

If it is dark, stormy or foggy, weather conditions can make this process longer and harder for our linemen. Once they locate the cause of the outage, the linemen verify again that the line is not energized before installing grounding devices on the line to ensure their safety.

Basically, any interruption between power generation and the supply of electricity to homes can cause a power outage. It can stem from inclement weather conditions, human error, equipment failure, and even animal interference.

Average Duration of Power Outages

On average, most technical or minor outages in the USA last about 1-2 hours. However, those caused by major natural disasters can extend for days or even weeks.

A distribution fuse can take a few minutes to repair; a distribution transformer can take a couple of hours to replace; but widespread damage to the transmission system can take days, weeks, or even months to repair.
