What is the military format for 24-hour time? ›

Military time uses a leading zero and doesn't have a colon, while 24 hour time uses a colon but not a leading zero. For example, 8 o'clock AM is shown as 0800 in military and 8:00 in 24 hour time. 8 PM would be 2000 (military) and 20:00 (24 hour).

Add 12 to the first hour of the day and include “AM.”

In 24-hour time, midnight is signified as 00:00. So, for midnight hour, add 12 and the signifier “AM” to convert to 12-hour time. This means that, for example, 00:13 in 24-hour time would be 12:13 AM in 12-hour time.

If the time is in the PM, instead of subtracting 12 hours from the hour portion of the time, you should add 12 to the hour portion of the time. For instance, if you want to convert 2:30 pm to military time, you should add 12 to the hour portion, resulting in 14:30 hours.

From standard time to military time

Standard times 12:01 AM to 12:59 AM — remove the colon, then subtract 12 from the number designating the hours. In the end, remove AM/a.m. Standard times 1:00 AM to 9:59 AM — add a zero before the first digit, remove the colon, and remove the AM/a.m.

At midnight, the clock resets back to 0. For times between midnight and noon, simply remove the colon and add a 0 before the time.
