Did EB White have Alzheimer's? ›

In his old age, E.B. White suffered from Alzheimer's disease. As his memory started to go, his son Joel would read his books to him, even though White often forget that he himself was the author. Sometimes he would complain that the writing wasn't good enough, but at passages he liked, he'd ask who wrote the words.

White was shy around women, claiming he had "too small a heart, too large a pen". But in 1929, after an affair that led to Katharine Angell's divorce, she and White were married. They had a son, Joel White, a naval architect and boat builder, who later owned Brooklin Boat Yard in Brooklin, Maine.

On October 1, 1985, White died at his home in North Brooklin, Maine. He was 86 and, according to The New York Times, had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease. White was survived by his son, Joel, his stepchildren, Roger Angell and Nancy Stableford and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In later life, White was diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease. His family said he fought the condition with “grace and humour”. His son, Joel, would read to his father to entertain him.
