It helps to look at the parent breeds from where the Dalmadoodle originated to understand the background of this popular hybrid dog. While the Dalmatian breeds origin is unknown, there have been spotted dogs found in Egyptian Bas-reliefs and Hellenic friezes so it is an ancient breed. In 1993 efforts to have the breed recognised as having Croatian roots was finally accepted. In the middle ages, the Dalmatian was used as a hound. They then became popular as a carriage dog in the 1800s, trotting along beside and among the horses and carriages and guarding them while the master was occupied elsewhere. It has also been a mascot for firemen, war sentinel, draft dog, circus performer, vermin hunter, bird dog, trail and finally as a guard dog. The Poodle started out their lives as hunting dogs. It is from German origin but the French refined it and made it their own. Dating back to 1800s or earlier, they were especially good as water retrieving. Quick and intelligent with a desire to please, they later became popular as performing dogs with travelling troupes and circuses. Poodles come in three sizes and are one of the most popular breeds in the world. They appear as glamorous in the show ring, but have worked diligently for the blind and as police dogs. They compete in all dog sports including herding sheep, obedience, and agility. They were recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1886.

Dalmadoodle Breed Appearance

The Dalmadoodle usually inherits the soft fluffy coat from its Poodle parentage, and the attractive coloration of the Dalmatian which gives it a unique and attractive appearance. They have a large athletic body and long tails, and are beautifully proportioned. The Dalmadoodle carries itself proudly, holding its head up and looking alert. With a head that is rounded on top, and wideset expressive dark eyes that are topped by fluffy eyebrows – they can look dignified but are not beyond being a bit comical. The nose is black with wide spaced nostrils, the muzzle is long and the teeth meet in a scissors type bite. Lean all over with well-formed strong legs, the Dalmadoodle combines good looks with a gentle playful nature.

Dalmadoodle Breed Maintenance

While the Dalmadoodle can have a similar coat to the Poodle, because it has the Dalmatian genes as well the coat, he is unlikely to be hypoallergenic. One thing is certain, you will need to brush the dog's coat often to keep it healthy, clean and tangle free. If the coat is more Poodle like in texture, it may need grooming appointments to strip and trim the coat. Grooming is a good time to check your dog for cuts or infections, clean inside the ears, and give their teeth a good brushing. If you train your Dalmadoodle to get used to regular grooming, it will make it easier when your baby grows up. A dog that is used to being handled has the advantage of an easy visit to the veterinarian without any stress. Most dogs will enjoy the routine and regard it as extra time and attention from you. Make sure you remember to clip their toenails at the same time.

Dalmadoodle Temperament

The Dalmadoodle is a medium to large dog but has a soft gentle nature. Their playful nature makes them ideal with children. They will not tire of the endless games children can invent, and will join in whether invited or not. The Dalmadoodle is intelligent and benefits from training, although you may need to be patient as some have a stubborn streak. The training schedule needs to be fun, mentally stimulating, and short at first. Be patient and kind, they can be sensitive to harsh words or tone. The Dalmadoodle usually enjoys learning new tricks, especially if you dollop out plenty of praise. These dogs are happy and enthusiastic dogs, loving and affectionate and love lots of attention. Their mission in life is to please you, so they will be like Velcro and stick to your side. While they are protective and will warn you with a woof or two when strangers are about, they are not an aggressive dog. New people in the home may find the Dalmadoodle being a bit reserved at first, but once the dog gets to know them, they will be easy going and playful.

Dalmadoodle Activity Requirements

The Dalmadoodle is an active dog and requires a good walk each day and preferably some time off the lease in the back yard to explore, play with the children or just to chill out as dogs do. They will love joining you when jogging or hiking, and will enjoy an outing to the dog park where they can socialise and meet other dogs and owners in a safely fenced area. These dogs need to be mentally stimulated with games or toys to burn off that inquisitive energy. The Dalmadoodle can settle in within a town or country location – as long as the family is happy, they are too. During hot weather, they may need a swim or garden hose play to cool off. Always ensure your dog has a sheltered spot to get away from the heat if it is left alone for a while. Overheating can occur quickly and can be fatal.
